JUDGEMENT

(1.) It has been submitted by Mr. Dutta, appearing in person for the petitioner, that although National Ganga River Basin Authority has been constituted to oversee the pollution to be controlled in the river Ganges and they have to take steps in the matter, but no information has been received by him excepting to the extent that he has been able to find out from the Projects Reports in respect of West Bengal that some steps for River Front Development have been tried to be taken up by the said Authority. He further submitted that steps are being taken only for the development of the River Front and for the development of Ghats on the side of the river Ganges, but no steps have been taken to improve the water of the Ganges or to free the Ganges from the pollution so created and is still being created by the municipal authorities and others. Hence, he submitted that a proper action plan has to be taken by the said authorities to clear the Ganges by adopting dredging method and other necessary methods to clean the river Ganges to prevent the pollution.
(2.) Hence, we direct the petitioner to serve notice on the National Ganga River Basin Authority to apprise the Court that what steps have been taken in the matter.
(3.) Mr. Dutta produced some photographs showing dumping of garbage on the river bank of the Ganges and construction work extended to river side of the Ganges. Mr. Shyama Prasad Purkait, learned Advocate, appears on behalf of the Diamond Harbour Municipality.;
